How To Stop Hereditary Hair Loss

To stop hereditary hair loss, you need to understand it and the treatments that are available today. Androgenetic alopecia is the scientific term used to describe the condition that causes male pattern baldness. There are three key contributing factors to this disease. The first factor is a pre-existing genetic propensity for balding, the second contributor is found in male hormones and the final factor is aging.

Scientists have cautioned that a genetic disposition for balding is not necessarily a guarantee that baldness will occur. However, it serves as an indicator that baldness is likely. As for male hormones, it is important to remember that all adults, both men and women produce male hormones. Obviously, males will produce higher levels of androgens (male sex hormones) than women and it therefore follows that hair loss is far more common in men.

There is no known cure for hair loss but the disease can be effectively treated and prevented. There are methods that can retard hereditary hair loss. The most common treatments are found in Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride). Once a subject begins to suffer hair loss in a hereditary pattern he/she should commence treatment. The aim of the treatment is to effectively prevent further hair loss.

Minoxidil which can be used by both sexes is a lotion and is available over the counter. It is applied to the scalp twice a day and usually stops additional hair loss within two months of beginning treatment. In fact, some subjects can even grow new hair within 4 to 8 months of using minoxidil.

Finasteride is only available by prescription and is sold in tablet form. The properties contained in the product operate to block the testosterone that adversely influences hair follicles. Studies conclude that finasteride is effective in 99 percent of all men suffering hereditary male baldness.
