Tell Me About Premature Baldness

Tell me about premature baldness since it is now hitting me! Hair growth by its very nature dictates that all hair loss is premature. The human head hairs grow for approximately three to five years before taking a three month hiatus. At the end of the three month break, the hair falls out and new hair grows in its place. When new hair fails to replace the old hair, thinning and/or balding is the result. When this process of hair loss occurs in young adults under the age of 25 it is referred to as premature balding.

Researchers are not altogether certain what causes premature balding. A popular axiom is stress, as it manifests itself in both external and internal factors. Ironically, once the process of balding commences the subject can and usually suffers increased levels of anxiety and stress.

Another irony in the hair loss list of facts, is the role that testosterone plays in both the male hair loss and hair growth process. Testosterone is responsible for the male hair growth process and it also contributes to balding in men. When testosterone combines with DHT (a hormone which originates from testosterone), it operates to retard hair follicles. Hair follicles produce the hair on the forehead and the upper scalp.

Scientist have come to accept the common belief that premature balding can be genetic although it can be merely coincidental. At the same time, scientists have become increasingly dismissive of the notion that premature baldness is influenced by diet, climate and race.

There is no known cure for baldness, but there are effective treatments for controlling the process. Popular products of appreciable results are found in Rogaine and Propecia. An effective method for those suffering premature balding is to keep the hair short and massage the scalp so as to stimulate the hair follicles. The longer the hair is kept, the weaker the roots.
